Learn how Breast Cancer Awareness Month began, why early detection matters, and key stats and screening guidance.

Empower yourself with the facts and take control of your health.

 1. How Breast Cancer Awareness Month Got Started
  • Breast Cancer Awareness Month traces back to October 1985, initiated as a weeklong campaign by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries (a British pharmaceutical company) to raise awareness and promote screening. Oncology Nurse Advisor+3Breast Cancer Organization+3brownhealth.org+3
  • Over time, it expanded into a full month and has become a global movement focused on education, funding, and early detection. UICC+3Oncology Nurse Advisor+3Susan G. Komen®+3
  • The pink ribbon became the symbol of the movement in 1991–1992: Estée Lauder and Self magazine popularized the pink ribbon and distributed them at counters across the U.S. america.sullair.com+4rugcc.rutgers.edu+4Susan G. Komen®+4
  • Before the pink ribbon, activist Charlotte Haley created a peach-colored ribbon to draw attention to underfunding of cancer prevention research. Though she declined commercial campaigns, her idea inspired the modern ribbon campaign. rugcc.rutgers.edu

2. Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters
  • Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the U.S. (after skin cancer) and a leading cause of cancer death. CDC+2CDC+2
  • Each year, about 279,731 new cases are reported among women (2022 data), with 42,213 deaths in 2023 attributed to breast cancer. CDC+2CDC+2
  • Thanks to earlier detection, improved treatments, and awareness, the breast cancer death rate has declined over recent decades. American Cancer Society+2Oncology Nurse Advisor+2
  • Awareness campaigns help promote screening, research funding, and early detection. Oncology Nurse Advisor+2Susan G. Komen®+2

3. Key Facts & Statistics
Here are five important facts to keep in mind:
  1. Annual Incidence & Mortality
Around 279,731 new female cases in the U.S. in 2022 and over 42,000 deaths in 2023. CDC+2CDC+2
  2. Age Distribution
While breast cancer is more common in women over 50, it also affects younger women. Most cases occur among older women. CDC+2CDC+2
  3. Screening Rates
Approximately 67.5% of women aged 40+ had a mammogram within the past 2 years (2019 data). CDC
More recently, among women aged 50 to 74, 79.8% received screening in 2023. Health.gov
  4. Screening Reduces Mortality
Studies show mammography screening can reduce breast cancer death rates by 15–30% through early detection. PMC
  5. Metastatic Diagnoses Rising Slightly
From 2001 to 2021, the incidence of metastatic (distant-stage) breast cancer has increased in the U.S. CDC

4. When & How Often to Get Checked
  • The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends women aged 40 to 74 years at average risk get a mammogram every 2 years. CDC+2USPSTF+2
  • For women aged 40–49, decision to screen should be individualized based on risk factors and discussion with a provider. CDC+1
  • Some women at higher risk may also receive breast MRI in addition to mammograms. CDC
  • National programs like the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program offer screening services to low-income or uninsured women, helping bridge gaps in access. PMC+1

5. How to Perform a Breast Self-Check
Regular self-awareness is an additional tool (not a substitute for mammograms). Here’s how:
  1. Visual Inspection
Stand naked from the waist up in front of a mirror. Look for changes in shape, size, dimpling, or skin texture.
  2. Hands Raised
Raise your arms and check for changes again.
  3. Manual Examination (Standing or Lying Down)
Use the pads of your fingers to feel the entire breast—from the collarbone to the upper abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage—in a circular motion.
  4. Check Nipples
Look for discharge, inversion, or unusual scaling.
  5. Repeat Monthly
Choose a consistent day each month (e.g. right after your period or a set calendar day) to do your self-check.
If you notice any lumps, thickening, or changes, contact your healthcare provider for evaluation.

Final Thoughts
Breast cancer awareness saves lives—not just by promoting research, but by encouraging screening and early detection. Understanding its origins, current impact, and screening guidelines can empower you and your loved ones to act proactively.
