Do You Know Where Your Shut-Off Valve Is? Plumbing Emergencies 101

Know where your shut-off valve is? In a plumbing emergency, this small step can save you thousands in water damage.

Learn how to find it, use it, and prevent disaster.

When a pipe bursts or your water heater leaks, every second counts. One of the most overlooked but critical pieces of home maintenance is knowing where—and how—to shut off your main water valve. It’s a small action that can prevent major damage, costly repairs, and even denied insurance claims.

Why Your Shut-Off Valve Matters
Plumbing issues are one of the most common sources of home insurance claims—and one of the most expensive. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing account for nearly 24% of all homeowner insurance claims each year.

If you can stop the water quickly, you can minimize damage before it spreads to flooring, drywall, cabinetry, and more. That’s why knowing where your main shut-off valve is (and how to use it) can make the difference between a minor fix and a major loss.

Where to Find It
In most homes, the main water shut-off valve is located:
  • Near the perimeter wall in a utility room, garage, or basement
  • On the ground floor, where the water line enters the home
  • In warmer climates, it may be outside near an exterior hose bib or water meter
If you can’t find yours, check your home inspection report or ask a local plumber to help you locate and label it.

How to Shut It Off
  • Gate Valve (older homes): Turn the wheel clockwise until it stops.
  • Ball Valve (newer homes): Turn the handle a quarter-turn until it’s perpendicular to the pipe.
Tip: Do a test shutoff every 6–12 months to make sure it still works and hasn’t rusted or become stuck.

Preventing a Plumbing Disaster
Here are a few other smart habits:
  • Know your home’s plumbing age and material. Older pipes are more prone to leaks and breaks.
  • Install water sensors near your water heater, laundry, and sinks.
  • Label your shut-off valve clearly so guests or family can find it fast.
  • Consider leak coverage. Not all policies cover long-term, slow leaks—ask your insurance agent to review your protection.

Why This Matters for Insurance
Most insurance policies cover sudden and accidental water damage—but not damage from neglect or failure to act quickly. Being prepared and stopping the water fast shows you're taking proactive steps to care for your home, which may even help avoid premium increases after a claim.
