Keep Your Home Running Smoothly: The Importance of Water Heater Cleaning

Learn why flushing your water heater matters, how often to do it, and whether it’s safe to DIY.

Save money, extend your heater’s life, and protect your home from preventable water damage.

Why Cleaning Matters
Over time, sediment from minerals—especially in areas with hard water—settles at the bottom of your water heater.

If left uncleaned, this buildup can:
  • Reduce energy efficiency and raise your utility bills
  • Cause popping or rumbling sounds as water heats past the sediment
  • Damage heating elements or burner plates, shortening the life of the unit
  • Lead to discolored or rusty hot water—sometimes a sign of internal corrosion

Regular flushing removes this sediment, helping your water heater run more efficiently, heat faster, and last longer. Most experts recommend flushing once a year, but some households may need to do it more often depending on their water quality.

How Often Should You Flush It?
  • Annually is the standard for most homes
  • Every 6 months if you live in a hard water area or notice faster sediment buildup
  • Immediately if you hear cracking, popping, or banging noises
  • Anytime your hot water is rusty, smells off, or output is low
Check your water heater’s manual for specific recommendations from the manufacturer—some models may have unique maintenance steps.

Can You DIY It?
Yes! Flushing a water heater is a doable DIY task—and it can save you between $75 and $200 in service fees. Many kits are available online with everything you need, and there are dozens of walkthrough videos.

But always:
  • Turn off the gas or electricity before starting
  • Let the water cool before draining
  • Attach a hose to the drain valve and safely direct the water outside or to a drain
  • Run cold water through the tank to flush out any remaining sediment
  • Carefully refill and restore power/gas when done
Some homeowners do a partial flush every few months as a quick maintenance step—just draining a gallon or so to keep sediment from settling too deeply.

A Few Words of Caution
  • Always read your unit’s manual first—there may be important steps specific to your brand
  • Wear gloves and be careful—water inside the tank can be scalding
  • DIY is great, but if you’re unsure or uncomfortable, call a licensed plumber
A professional can also inspect other key components like the pressure relief valve, thermostat, or anode rod—parts that can impact performance and lifespan.

What Happens If You Don’t?

Skipping regular cleaning can lead to:
  • Higher gas/electric bills
  • Increased risk of leaks or internal corrosion
  • Shortened water heater lifespan (sometimes by years!)
  • Potential water damage to your home
And while home insurance can help in the event of water damage, it often doesn’t cover issues caused by long-term neglect or maintenance failure.

Final Thoughts from Corin Insurance
Keeping your water heater clean is simple, smart, and can save you money in the long run. Whether you flush it yourself or hire a professional, regular maintenance is one of the best ways to avoid surprise repairs or insurance claims.
