Distracted driving—especially texting behind the wheel—is a leading cause of crashes in the U.S.

Learn the latest statistics, why phone use while driving is so dangerous, and how you can protect yourself.

One driver distraction can change everything. Looking down at a phone to send a message, scroll through notifications, or program a navigation system—even for a few seconds—can lead to serious consequences. Here’s what the latest data shows about texting and driving & distracted driving in general, and what drivers need to be especially aware of.

1. How Big Is the Problem?
Latest U.S. Statistics
  • In 2023, distracted driving was involved in 3,275 deaths in the U.S. from motor vehicle crashes. NHTSA+2Injury Facts+2
  • In the same year, over 324,800 people were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. Geotab+2NHTSA+2
  • Distractions are present in about 8% of all fatal crashes, and about 14% of injury-causing crashes. Edgar Snyder & Associates+1
  • Texting or using cell phones is among the most common distractions. A large portion of fatal crashes involving distractions involve drivers aged 15-30. Miller & Zois+1

2. Why Texting & Phone Use Is Especially Dangerous
  • When you text and drive, your eyes, mind, and hands are all diverted from the road. Even a few seconds of distraction at highway speed equals several car-lengths of travel while you're not fully in control.
  • Young drivers are especially vulnerable—not just because of inexperience, but because they are more likely to use phones while driving. Statistics show that drivers in the 15-30 age range are disproportionately involved in these crashes. Miller & Zois+1
  • Also, distracted driving doesn’t only involve texting. Watching videos, interacting with social media, making phone calls (even hands-free in some jurisdictions), GPS interaction, and even reaching for objects can all contribute. Geotab+2NHTSA+2

3. Legal & Insurance Implications
  • Many states now have laws banning texting while driving or restricting cell phone use while driving. Violating these laws can lead to tickets, fines, and sometimes higher insurance premiums. Governors Highway Safety Association+2Miller & Zois+2
  • Insurance companies often see distracted driving as a factor in claim liability. Even when not explicitly stated, crash reports listing “driver distraction” can affect claims or litigation.
  • Driving while distracted could result in denial of a claim under certain conditions, especially if the distraction is found to have contributed to the accident.

4. What Drivers Can Do: Prevention & Safer Behavior
  • Turn on Do Not Disturb While Driving or similar features on your phone before you even start driving.
  • Place your phone out of reach—e.g. glove compartment or mounted where you can’t easily grab it.
  • Pull over safely if you need to read or send a message.
  • Avoid multitasking—focus on one task at a time: driving.
  • Teach teens and new drivers about the risks and enforce rules at home. Many adult behavior patterns are learned early.

Final Thoughts
The data is clear: distracted driving—and especially phone use while driving—continues to be a serious crash risk in America. Even though some states have strengthened laws, it still takes personal choices to make the roads safer. If you drive, commit to giving your full attention to the road. It’s not just safer—it could save lives.
