Icy Roads Ahead?

Essential Tips Every Texan Needs to Stay Safe On Icy Roads!

With freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow or ice in the forecast, driving in Texas can become especially challenging. Roads that are not treated for winter weather can become hazardous quickly, so preparing your vehicle and adjusting your driving habits are essential. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and be ready for the unexpected.

1. Prepare Your Vehicle for Cold Weather
Taking care of your vehicle before hitting the road is crucial during winter storms:
  • Check Your Tires: Ensure they’re properly inflated and have sufficient tread. Cold weather can reduce tire pressure, so check it regularly.
  • Diesel Vehicles: If you drive a diesel, check whether your vehicle has a plug-in engine block heater. Plugging it in overnight will help keep the engine warm and make starting easier in freezing temperatures.
  • Inspect Wipers and Fluid: Use windshield wiper fluid rated for freezing temperatures, and ensure your wiper blades are in good condition.
  • Test Your Battery: Cold weather can weaken your car battery. Have it tested to ensure it’s fully charged and functioning properly.
2. Drive Cautiously on Icy Roads
Driving in icy or snowy conditions requires extra care:
  • Slow Down: Reduce your speed significantly to maintain control.
  • Increase Your Following Distance: Allow at least 5–6 seconds of space between you and the vehicle ahead, as stopping on ice takes longer than on dry roads.
  • Avoid Sudden Movements: Accelerate, brake, and turn gently to avoid skidding. If your car starts to skid, steer into the direction of the skid until you regain control.
  • Turn Off Cruise Control: Cruise control is not safe for icy or wet roads—it can cause your vehicle to lose traction.
  • Avoid Bridges and Overpasses: These freeze more quickly than other roadways and are especially slippery.
3. Pack a Winter Emergency Kit
Having the right supplies in your vehicle can be a lifesaver if you get stranded or delayed. Keep the following items in your car:
  • A blanket or warm clothing
  • Ice scraper and de-icer spray
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Sand, kitty litter, or traction mats to help if your tires get stuck
  • Jumper cables
  • Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
  • Phone charger or power bank
  • First aid kit
4. Plan Your Route and Stay Informed Before heading out:
  • Check road conditions and weather updates through local news or the Texas Department of Transportation.
  • Avoid high-risk areas like bridges, overpasses, and rural roads that are less likely to be treated or cleared.
  • If possible, delay non-essential travel until conditions improve.
5. Stay Off the Roads if Possible
The safest way to handle winter storms is to avoid driving altogether unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you must drive, let someone know your route and estimated arrival time in case of emergencies.

By preparing your vehicle, driving cautiously, and packing essential supplies, you can reduce the risks of driving during winter storms. If you have any questions about your auto insurance coverage or need assistance, our team at Corin Insurance Group is here to help. Stay safe and warm this winter!
